WELCOME

We warmly welcome you to this platform hosted by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, which is the main Implementing Partner of the Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management Project. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) provides technical assistance to the Project while Sri Lanka’s other public-sector institutions such as Department of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Development, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Department of National Community Water Supply and Ministry of Disaster Management are actively involved as Responsible Partners.

As we move forward with this seven-year Project (2017-2024) we invite you to this interactive platform not only to familiarize yourself with the Project updates, to read scientific and research papers on relevant themes but also to share/ discuss your environment and Climate Change related concerns.

Objective

The Project enables farmer communities, particularly women, in the target river basins  sense of their own power also develop young community leaders, who would actively and continually be involved with the Project’s sustainability. It would encourage the currently marginalized communities to play a leadership role as the cascade tanks restored with their participation would survive and continue to serve them in all their water needs.

The collective decision making, promoted by the Project and the water sharing protocols it establishes for multiple community uses, will ensure social and inter community harmony. Different components of the Project would aim at the river basin women’s empowerment by introducing them to alternatives in drought resilient agriculture, entrepreneurship and technology related exposures that help respond to weather and climate information, and benefit from response measures to floods and droughts.
